How to Live Stream

You may have come across dozens of live streams across the internet, and have wondered how these are achieved. Follow this guide to get started conducting your own live stream, including a checklist of everything you’ll need to get it done.

Choose How to Start Your Live Stream

Basically, you’ve got a couple of options to start live streaming:

1)         From a Mac- or PC-based software encoder

2)         From a hardware-based encoder

Ensure Adequate Internet Connection Recommended (20 MBPS up/down)

You’ll obviously need the internet to live stream, but you’ve got to make sure that it is adequate enough. Preferably, you’ll need wired broadband connection to provide you with optimal performance. The speed of your overall internet connection should also be at least twice that of what you want to live stream. If you stream at half the connection speed, watching the feed simultaneously will cause you to go over your internet speed capability.

Your Live Streaming Checklist:

To get started live streaming, you’ll require:

An account with a live streaming service
A live channel
An XML profile

Your Video Source:

In order to live stream, the video needs to be brought through a hardware encoder or computer. If you’re using a computer to stream, make sure you have a video capture card, and that the computer is set up to accept video feeds. You can easily check this through the attached webcam that most likely exists on your laptop.

Of course, a computer’s webcam won’t provide the same level of quality as a dedicated camera. If you choose to use a camera, make sure it’s got a UVC, USB3 or Firewire connection that will have to be fed into the computer or encoder.

PC Encoder Computer Requirements:

✓         At least 8 GB of RAM

✓         At least 500 GB of free hard drive storage space

Mac Encoder Computer Requirements:

✓         At least 8 GB of RAM

✓         At least 500 GB of free hard drive storage space

✓         Mac OSX version 10.5 or later

✓         QuickTime 7 or later

✓         QuickTime compatible video capture device

✓         2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster

Your Software Encoder:

While there are plenty of software encoder solutions you can choose from, the only free one is the Flash Media Live Encoder. If you choose to use this version, download and install it. Once you’ve done that, you can save the XML with all account settings to the hard drive.

Launch Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder, then do the following:

Click FILE at the top left
Click OPEN PROFILE
Locate and open the profile you saved earlier
Click START in the program at the bottom when ready to stream
Enter your login and password under ENCODER SETUP

Your Hardware Encoder:

If you choose to use a hardware encoder, choose “professional encoder” as your method of acquisition in your account. Get a publishing point by going to STREAM, at which point you’ve receive a URL or a Stream URL and Stream Name. Should you be asked for a password and username, leave blank.
